"Unlike photography, illustration does not produce a mechanical, unselective documentation of a subject; it's point is not that of total recall but of an individual and refined interpretation. Yet a drawing can be more true than a photograph, for by selectivity and discrimination the artist can lay bare the essential."-
Nicholas Drake

"It must be our aim not to deny or disavow masculinity, but to disturb it's manifest destiny - to draw attention to it as a prosthetic reality."- Homi Bhabba, "Are You A Man Or A Mouse?" In Maurice Berger and Brian Wallis' 'Constructing Masculinity'.

"On the (fashion) runway there appears, amidst general excitement, a man, wobbling and swaying on a pair of stiletto heels...but not a transvestite, that's old hat, ever since the evening news started carrying coverage of fashion shows. This is a "real man", a "man's man"."- Giannino Malossi, describing the events at a Vivienne Westwood show, in 'Material Man'.

"The line between masculinity and femininity can be a very troubled frontier."- Jean Paul Gaultier

"Every display of virility becomes, per se, feminine."- Jacques Lacan

"Sex is the explanation for everything, our master key."- Michel Foucault

Welcome to the "World Of John Toth", a short introduction:

Informed by research involving the dynamic between clothing, the human body and sexuality, John Toth's drawings parody the well established cliches of masculinity and femininity and gleefully "bend the rules" of what is considered typically "male" or "female" with regard to dress and body language.

These ideas are then intermixed with references from the worlds of Fashion (Haute Couture in particular), "Fetish" (rubberwear, corsets, high heels etc..) and various subcultures, especially youth cults that revolved around specific types of music and nightclubs (Punks, Goths, Rockers etc..), as well as comic book/ "Sci-Fi" imagery and Pin-Up/ "Beefcake" Art.

Bio: John Toth was born and raised in Upstate N.Y. He trained in London for haircutting/coloring (at the Vidal Sassoon School and Creative Academy) and also studied with 'Antenna' London, the salon famous for avant-garde hair extensions. He then moved to New York City, where for over 20 years, he has worked as an editorial hair and makeup artist, haircutter, d.j. and (basically self taught) illustrator. He continues to follow his passion and draws constantly...
